Plot: Complex story about a San Francisco detective and his psychological troubles with fear of heights and obsession over a woman.
After suffering a vertigo attack on the job which resulted in the death of a colleague, John Ferguson (aka Scottie) decides to leave the police department. An old acquaintance seeks his help on his troubled wife and he reluctantly accepts to follow her.. it's not long before Scottie falls in love with the beautiful lady.. things get complicated from there.. very I enjoyed the San Francisco setting, taking a big part in this movie. Some beautiful scenes were shot at the Legion of Honor Museum and outside the Exploratorium Hitchcock takes a leisurely stroll in a street scene of the beginning as part of his trademark cameos This is pretty long movie, felt draggy a bit.. there was definitely a high point in the middle that is sustained and keeps the viewer riveted to every scenes after we find out about the intricate scheme.. a little thing Hitchcock uses called suspense. It is in the latter part of the movie that Scottie starts getting this psychotic quality to his character.. Stewart is pretty awesome, as he always is Novak is so sexy at times but really in a more old fashioned way... the movie ends tragically, mirroring Scottie's obsessive love for Madelaine.. it didn't hit me till much later, but Scottie's vertigo is cured at the end.. having experienced another traumatic experience as suggested in the beginning... whoa! The music is grand, ambitious and so amazing.. I feel bad for the new movies where the score is whatever catchy tune catchy that day or some random ambient music... kudos Considered by some critics to be Hitchcock's ultimate masterpiece, I had some issues with the pacing especially early on. I really admired a lot of the shots and the vertigo effect (dubbed the Hitchcock zoom) is of course very famous Last Updated 11/20/2005 4:07:10 PM 2hr 09min / Directed by Alfred Hitchcock / Starring James Stewart, Kim Novak / Language: English / Watched: DVD Also by Alfred Hitchcock - filmography (11 movies)
