Plot: Don Cheadle stars in the true-life story of Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager who housed over a thousand Tutsis refugees during their struggle against the Hutu militia in Rwanda.
This is a sad story of the Rwandan conflict that received little media attention because it took place in Africa, far away from the eyes and the ears of Americans and Europeans "There's always room" Big drama, kept me pretty rivetted. Paul (Chealdle) used the hotel where he was in charge to shelter some 1000 refugees from certain death. Think of it as a modern day Schindler's List, with a hotel, in Africa. Make no mistake though, the massacres in Rwanda surely qualify as a genocide Cheadle was nominated for an Oscar, with good reason. He plays Paul with that certain African accent, a bit non-descript but it's a cross between French and uhmm, I dunno, something else. His scenes where he's in despair over his family are particularly powerful "We're here as peace keepers, not peace makers" Nolte has a supporting role as UN colonel with a prominent Canadian patch on the arm but his attitude and performance are very American, especially when he uses the N-word at some point to tell Paul that Africans are worth even less in the eyes of the Western world Good sad movie Last Updated 8/26/2005 3:43:36 PM 2hr 01min / Directed by Terry George / Starring Don Cheadle, Sophie Okonedo, Nick Nolte / Language: English / Watched: DVD | ||||
