This is one of the best movies of the 2004

It had been a few years since I had read it though so this was quite refreshing still. The switch to Cuaron for director changed the mood quite a bit, everything form the subject (a wizard prisoner on the loose is out to kill Harry) to the actual lighting is much darker. I was pleased in general, though I'd have to say all the details in the novel did not make it to the big screen, with good reason I suppose. What the novel had was a very intricate plot and the truth is that cannot be reflected in a movie adaptation. Still kudos to all involved in the flick. The kids are getting older fast, I read in trade reports that they are already shooting the fourth movie and that the kids might be replaced down the line. They act the part pretty well

The casting (Thewlis) for one of my favorite character in the book Remus Lupin (this year's defence against the dark arts professor) was a bit strange but it worked in the end. Gary Oldman as Sirius Black was a stroke of genius. The casting folks for the Harry potter flicks have been on the money in general. Is this my favorite Harry Potter movie? Possibly. Even more so than with #2, there's a lot less exposition and we dive right into the kick of things (sort of assumes you've watched the previous installments), I thought this one left little room to be bored. In a sense, it went by a bit too fast but that's also because Rowling the author packs so much in the constantly growing page count on the novels.

Some other quick thoughts: Hogwarts never looked this grand and sinister; the Malfoy kid is such a pussy, even more so on screen than on paper; Michael Gambon who took over the role of Dumbledore from the deceased Richard Harris did not miss a beat; Buckbeak (the hippogryph) looked great, so did Padfoot as a wolf/dog, the animagus (animagi?) transformation coulda used some work, actually the werewolf looked less hairy than I had conjured up in my head but he bore quite a resemblance to the actor playing him; oh and that whole time travel thing... leave it alone, ish makes no sense haha.
