Clyde Fans: Book 1 (2004)
Seth
comics / alternative - ISBN 189659784X

Seth came into prominence for me after I found out he was the designer for the Fantagraphics Complete Peanutes books

The story starts with an old man Abraham who used to run a local shop that sells fans (as in the Clyde Fans Company, named after his father) and he talks about the business and everything, he talks at the reader which is kinda weird, not super enticing but slowly he builds on how the business faltered and more explicitely how it affected his family and brother Simon.. what happened to him?

The book is not black and white but subdued shades of gray and blue, I believe the term monocromatic is used in this case. The art is very intricate, the composition is such that many frames focus on single objects that are on the background in other panels, and happen to be related to something Abraham says, it is quite good. He'll mention Simon and you'll see a close-up on a frame of them growing up as kids, revealing they are brothers. Little things

Seth (né Gregory Gallant) also letters the book which is a rather large task, his lettering skill can be seen not only in bubbles but in many of the panels as graphic for newspapers, signs, different objects

The book is divided in two parts, first takes place today (97) with the older brother Abe talking about the business and being a salesman

2nd is about Simon (40 years ago) and what happened to him on a sales trip. This is a new thing he is trying and his brother Abe doesn't really have faith in him. Simon actually has to overcome some kind of fear of crowds and people. It's not made clear

In conclusion, the art is great. I love the details on objects, building, it's very easy on the eyes, I can't find a better way to put it. It's cartoony though. The story doesn't really do it for me but the book does end on a cliffhanger of some sort and I'd love to find out how it ends
