Lucky (1999)
Alice Sebold
memoir - ISBN 0316096199

You'll never find another guy who actually liked The Lovely Bones, I really did. Anyway, "Lucky" actually came out before, which I didn't know. I guess the distinction of fiction and non-fiction make The Lovely Bones Sebold's first novel

Anyway, this is about the author's real experience with rape. Yeah bleak. I read the first chapter at B&N and it was quite amazing. I bought this for a friend and she let me borrow it after she was done (she says it's ok)

Things drop off a bit after the event, Alice goes home to rebuild herself and there's background on her family (her mom is nuts), a removed father, rivalry with a perfect older sister. I'm not sure what I expected but the novel plays out all the events leading up to and following the eventual trial of her rapist, Sebold's been through a lot, and there's even more that piles on. The fact that it's a memoir make it really powerful (as in stop lying James Frey)

I myself got turned off on the whole legal proceedings, partly a (hopefully temporary) personal disdain for law enforcement and justice but that's really on me. The book should be a very inspirational survivor story, life is ugly, you have to roll with it

I finished "Lucky" in a week which attests to its engrossing quality. However I don't know if I can or want to recommend this, rape is horrendous
