The X-Files - I Want to Believe - 3/5

Directed by Chris Carter
Starring David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Xzibit , Amanda Peet, Billy Connolly

Gripping from the beginning though I had a big problem when they were switching to the other side of the investigation. Still the beloved characters deliver well on the show's premise, even if this is a glorified extended episode (x 2.5)

Cast: Duchovny shoulda kept the beard, Connolly (Father Joe) was quite impressive, good pick ups on Peet whose screen presence is always a delight, a bit disappointed that Xzibit played such an ass

Solid movie, especially for fans of the tv series

We owe this retarded masterpiece to writer director Michael McCullers. It starts out that way but it's not as lame as you'd think, it gets better as the two girls develop a strange friendship, weird but better

I like the doorman, the eventual boyfriend. The movie turns about the half way mark and gets pretty good. Oh yeah Steve Martin's role is lame

 Planet B-Boy - 2/5

Directed by Benson Lee
Starring Gamblerz, Last For One, Ichigeki

Movie's official date may be 2007 but it came out in 08 in the US

I really wanted to like this especially since one of the crews featured is from France but they come off as real assholes. The German guy who organizes the show looks a bit less than legit but that's just appearances (or the accent)

Of course there's a huge soft spot for the Asian crews but some of the background stories are mad sad. I do feel super hyped about Gamblerz (just that name!)

The US crew is actually an early version of America's Best Dance Crew season 2 winner Super Crew (which begs the question if this one or that one is authentic)

Overall okay, a bit underwhelming but still some of the best dancing captured on film

Summer Catch is such a waste of film

Written: Dec 02 '01

Pros: Nothing, maybe Jessica Biel's swimming pool scene

Cons: Mindless story, characters

The Bottom Line: This movie is not funny, not relaxing, not suspensful and definitely a waste of film and time.

kewlio's Full Review: Summer Catch

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

Oh no, not another teen-oriented dramatic comedy starring Freddie Prinze Jr (FPJ). While Summer Catch proved to be an innocent summer movie about a kid dreaming to get discovered as a baseball pitcher, it proved to be a horrible choice for a video to watch.

The story centers about FPJ's character Ryan Dunne and a summer league that prepares mostly college students for the major leagues. The real problem is the story never generates interest past the first 5 minutes where the main exposition occurs. The movie tugs in so many direction, with Ryan's emotional past, a weird struggling slugger (played by Matthew Hillard of Scream fame, more recently seen in Thirteen Ghosts), to an Indian player being sexually pursued by a much older woman. Summer Catch also puts focus on Ryan's relationship with his dad and brother but again, it fails to move you in any way as it forces you to understand their strained relationship.

FPJ as I mentioned just recycles his characters over and over from I Still know what you did last summer to She's All That. He's that teenage guy with I suppose good looks but his roles are invariably the same ones over and over again. While he was quite amusing in Head over heels, his credibility as an actor really dipped for me after watching Summer Catch. Jessica Biel who plays FPJ's character's romantic interest is rather unconvincing as the viewer struggle to understand their relationship. The two are just thrown together and we're supposed to understand it. Sigh.. While Michael Tollin's direction is okay, it lacked any real excitement, espcially for the baseball scenes that seemed mechanical and repetitive. Tollin to his credit has been more successful producing the surprise hit Hardball (2001) and the TV series Smallville (WB)

All in all, a movie you can only sit through with excruciating pain, but that I nevertheless watched in its entirety in hope of a redeeming ending. In vain to my dismay. Watch anything but this.

 Little Nicky - 1/5

Directed by Steven Brill
Starring Adam Sandler, Patricia Arquette, Harvey Keitel, Rhys Ifans

I wrote this review for Epinions (rip)

Little Nicky is a little stupid..

Written: Nov 09 '01

Pros: Somewhat entertaining if you are bored

Cons: Humor is of very low grade

The Bottom Line: You should only watch this if somebody made the mistake to buy or rent this. You've been warned.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

Well Adam Sandler accustomed us to hilarious movies, albeit not of the highest level, at leat intellectually. We raved (well some of us) for the Waterboy and especially Big Daddy. There seemed to be a natural progression to a more mature Sandler with deeper meaning in his theatrical projects. Well I don't know if there is such a progression in the plan, but Little Nicky sends Sandler back 10 years with some really foul humor and plain stupid characters.

Nicky (Sandler), one of the devil's (played by Harvey Keitel) three sons has to go after his brothers who are raising "hell" on earth. He's doing it to save his dad who's losing his body (read this not too loosely) because his rebellious sons sealed the entrance to hell.

So Nicky is out there in the real world, where everything that's common to us, is real strange to him. He eventually learns more about himself, and why he's different fom his brothers. He learns about being good and what not.

I was so bored I could barely keep my eyes on the movie. The special effects were horrible and Sandler's latest speech impediment just didn't work. Gosh, even his hair got on my nerves.

The movie has a very few good jokes and some redeeming values in the recurring characters you should recognize from previous Sandler movies.

A big disappointment from those who have grown to love Sandler, from Happy Gilmore to Big Daddy. And I'm a fan. I mean, most critics killed this movie.

 Men Of Honor - 2/5

Directed by George Tillman Jr.
Starring Robert De Niro, Cuba Gooding Jr, Charlize Theron, Aunjanue Ellis, Hal Holbrook

I wrote this review for Epinions (rip)

Why you shouldn't see Men Of Honor

Written: Nov 18 '00

Pros: Cuba Gooding Jr is a great actor

Cons: De Niro's character, boring storyline, slow

Men Of Honor is marketed as a highly inspirational movie about Carl Brashear, the first African American diver in the history of the Navy. Unfortunately, the movie failed to generate enough interest to keep me watching..

Carl came from a farming family and wants to live up to his father's expectation as he enlists himself to the Navy after High School. He will always try to make his father proud, although black men were still regarded as second class in the Navy. But Carl's natural ability and interest takes him out of the kitchen, where most Blacks work, and onto diving school, led by Master Chief Billy Sunday (Robert De Niro). The movie goes on to follow Carl's training at school and the barriers and stereotypes he has to break. Cuba Gooding Jr plays opposide De Niro and they have undeniable chemistry as actors.

The fact that this picture is based on a true story actually makes you think twice and go.. wow, this guy is amazing, he had to go through all this hardship, and this is not something someone just thought up, it's real. Unfortunately, despite Carl's accomplishment, the movie was really slow, and kind of boring too.

One of the least pleasing aspect of the movie may be De Niro's character, who comes off as sadistic and drunk and who thinks he is bigger than life. I could not stand his craziness and just didn't connect with him. Charlize Theron plays a minor role in De Niro's character's wife, but she is as beautiful as ever, although her character doesn't make sense at all.

The movie sure promotes great values: honor, a son's love and respect for his father.. Also, a word has to be said about Cuba Gooding Jr, he put a lot of energy in his performance, but the story or the screenplay doesn't keep up with his talent. Wouldn't watch this, at least not at the theaters.
