Watched it at Winchester 22 to an eventually sold out theater (I think it sold well in the bay). We saw two protesters who packed their signs as we arrived (something closer to this than a full on rally), that was odd. Kinda glad that it didn't totally blow, expectations were so high for me but then the negative reviews started rolling in. So it worked out. Pretty safe movie

The Da Vinci Code tops week-end box office with $77 Million [Coming Soon!]

Da Vinci Code (2006) - 4/5
IMDB (6.2/10): A murder inside the Louvre and clues in Da Vinci paintings lead to the discovery of a religious mystery protected by a secret society for two thousand years -- which could shake the foundations of Christianity.

Da Vinci Code is a solid 2-hour plus thriller. Everyone was happy when Ron Howard got behind the project and Hanks was picked for Professort Langldon but then a simple question? What if they really blow it

Well the critics have spoken but sometimes critics get too into the mechanics of a movie or in this case, they might have a problem with the adaptation. People who haven't read the book have a lot less to nitpick about

Two important scenes of exposition had to be done perfectly and the one at Chateau Villette really worked, thanks to some gizmo effects and the always masterful McKellen. I thought in contrast, Langdon solving the cryptex in London was cheesy. By the way, his presentation slides before his book signing were like the so professionally produced it wasn't even funny. In the end the big revelation of the movie falls a bit flat, I thought my head was gonna explode when I was reading about it, he it just comes and goes, and you're on to the next scene

On its own the movie sure has its flaws, they way Langdon and Neveu (la ravissante Tautou) are thrown together is rushed, a lot of their master reasoning and arguments are now superficial, so much is omitted and there's really no way around it; but it eventually satisfies a long time fan of the novel. It's been a while so a lot of stuff was fuzzy. Hey I finally understood the font design for the movie title, with the A which is a rotated V, very subtle cool stuff

Hanks is adequate, nothing special. And yet I have no idea who coulda played his role better. Bettany can be one creepy guy (especially after such an implausible turn in Firewall), Audrey Tautou is French beauty incarnate

Special bigs ups to screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, that was a complicated story. You so wanna go to France (and England) after this. Original one sheet

Google (the puzzle makers) had a fun Da Vinci Code quest with a first prize trip to France or something, the finalists got a cryptex that looks super cool (cryptex on Flickr, two good sets and credit for picture below). I want one

Counterpoint by CHUD.com
The Da Vinci Code is like a monument to everything that is wrong with modern American culture – a clumsy movie based on a book written at a fourth grade reading level, and filled with factual inaccuracies and bad theories about half-understood history. It’s the triumph of the stupid.
