I was checking out this Pogue article on Google Video (it kinda sucks) and marvelled a bit the page layout and navigation. It's friendly for folks running 1024 x 768 resolution (by a large, still a majority of people from my site stats, 61% of visitors), the entire article fits on a page with related articles, page viewing options on the left and a long thin banner to the right The big thing is its page presentation forgoes the conventional multiple "page" span for a long article, instead we get a 3-column layout with a simple mouseover javascript that takes you to the next or previous page if you click on either left or right column. A bright orange "previous" or "next" icon serves as indicator. I quite like it but it's not at all obvious and a bit disorienting coming from a large old media site. I wonder if there's loss of ad revenue as you reduce page views, it sure is an enjoyable user experience Click on the image and check out the Flickr notes ![]() I was checking out the Internet Archive Wayback Machine to determine when this design went into effect but it wasn't all that helpful. I guess sometime in 2005 Checking out Alexa traffic history, there hasn't been much change. iht.com site reach is dwarfed by nytimes.com so maybe they can afford experimentation ![]() Incidently, David Pogue might be better known for being a technology columnist at the NY Times, his review is also here Links - http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/01/18/business/ptpogue19.php?rss#
