I first came across Chuck Close at the Met this past November. It was impressive, the grand scale, the photo-like quality (a style aptly named "photorealistic"). His famous giant portraits would actually evolve to take a mosaic form which would be a natural progression for the artist who deconstructed photos into grids of cellsCharles Thomas Close overcame dyslexia to graduate magna cum laude from UW and earn his MFA studying painting at Yale. In 1988, he suffered a stroke that left him quadriplegic (paralyzed from the neck down). He has continued to paint with a brush between his teeth, one of such completed work is Kiki, 1993 There's an exhibit underway at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art until February 28 More Chuck Close at Flickr Links - http://sfmoma.org/exhibitions/exhib_detail.asp?id=208 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_close
