I've had very vibrant dreams lately, probably some excess brain activity from not watching tv, who knows. Last night I dreamt I had bought a Nikon D70, a popular Digital SLR these days. These cameras are the real deal, they virtualy eliminate the dubious macro focus range spec, and let you take juicy wide angle pics my old trusty ultra compact SD300 can't touch. Some proof from Flickr

Some pro ish for sure, with a pro price (Nikon D70S $1,099.99). More pictures in the Flickr D70 macro cluster

POSITIVE NEGATIVE posts shots that consistently amaze me, is it the camera or the photographer

He actually uses a Canon (Canon EOS 5D $3,048.94)

Here's a quick SLR survey on the rest of my favorite photoblogs
- daily dose of imagery Canon EOS Digital Rebel 350D $899.94
- A Walk Through Durham Township, Pennsylvania Nikon D100 $1,099.99
- I've Seen Better Canon 20D $1,399.00

For all the technical prowesses of these gizmos, chromogenic.net is fierce enough to use 35mm analog equipment, the latest batch were taken with an Olympus Stylus Epic $82.94.. yeah beat that

In this day and age, developing on film and scanning pictures seems a bit counter intuitive

Back in December, there was an article about how Sony came up with the first LCD (through a redesigned processing chip for lower power consumption), other SLRs have to be used with the antiquated viewfinder. Sony ain't the most trustworthy brand for a SLR but I've gotten used to taking pictures through the LCD (Sony Cybershot DSCR1 $999.99)

Ah who am I kidding, these things are so huge it'd never happen

- Some point-and-shoot compacts have outstanding macro focusing
abilities. Better than a lot of SLR lenses. Also, I think Canon still
has a compact that has a 28mm wide end to the lens. So you don't
necessarily have to go DSLR for macro and wide angle, though there are
certainly benefits.

- It is always more the photographer than the camera, though often the
photogapher's "skill" boils down to being at the right place at the
right time.

- The Oly Stylus Epic is legendary as a cheap P&S film camera with
surprisingly sharp optics.

- The Sony DSC-R1 is a fantastic camera. Awesome technical design, in
terms of the sensor and the elimination of a mirror prism. The focal
length range encompasses 99% of your needs. But, for me, f/2.8 is too
slow (and that's only on the wide end), but then I take the majority
of my pictures at night, indoors, by whatever light is available in a
restaurant or bar.

- An LCD screen is nice for framing in odd situations -- like low
shots or overhead ones. But there's nothing as fast or accurate as an
optical viewfinder. I never use the rear LCD if I can use an optical
viewfinder. And the one thing I don't like about the DSC-R1 is its use
of an Electronic Viewfinder. This one must be better than the first
EVFs that came out, but unless the frame/refresh rate is way the fuck
up there, it's always gonna lag in comparison to an optical.
