I'm pretty lame on keepin up with my magazines and I'm just getting to this great article in the February Esquire by Tom Chiarella Haggling for Hot Dogs. I wasn't surprised that he was the same writer as The 20 Dollar Millionaire, his style was so distinctive, or maybe it's the subject of money

Anyway, this is a pretty good read that looks at price as merely a suggestion. What a concept! After a couple of failures getting a discount off a hot dog cart vendor (New York) and at a gas station (Indiana), Tom hits up negotiation expert Herb Cohen on how to improve his bargaining skills

Come away with it with some nuggets to try on your next price haggling adventure
- offer something: buy multiple items, customer loyalty, trading favors
- work with someone who has a stake in the sale, has the power to negotiate (Kevin Smith line from Chasing Amy)
- be personable, humanize yourself
- beware the counteroffer

Here are a few key phrases
"Can you work with me on this?"
"Hmm..."
"If I buy 4 or 5, will you help me on the price?"
"Does this go on sale anytime soon?"

The real kicker is that the author after building himself up on all oppotunities to haggle over the price of something start to transfer his skills to negotiating at large, in all kinds of situation
