google maps

Tested out the new beta tool Google Maps (powered by Navteq and TeleAtlas) and it's pretty hot. It adjusts map sizes to whatever your browser window size for optimal viewing area. There's the age old trick of breaking the large map image into smaller rectangles so it loads up faster and that does a good job. Lots of options beyond simple mapping includes business search, ties to google index for addresses, directions. It also provides a link generator to make sure you link properly to a map/direction to email someone or for future reference

The tool uses a pretty popular way of identifiying objects on the map with small pins for location matches, clicking on the pins or their corresponding results on the right side has a popup caption with an impressive shadow cast on the map. I find the zoom, moving around the map and auto scrolling as you select different location entries pretty sweet (doesn't reload the entire page)

Google is doing maps right (US only though), I think everyone will start using this in a hurry

Good writeup at SEW
