samsung sch-a670, a quick review

So I've been using the phone for a couple of weeks now, it came really fast btw, Verizon Wireless online ships FedEx 2-day or something, it was free so that's nice Construction is very solid, it doesn't feel cheap since it's all metal, it's actually a bit bigger than the previous version of this phone without the camera on it (slightly smaller than my v60). The camera is sorta useless, I'm not down with picture messaging but I hear there''s a hack for getting the pics if you purchase a data cable. The phone ships with a belt clip and a charger The phone will make a huge sound when you take pictures, that's to avoid people doing upskirt shots or other weird shit in the locker room, I dunno hahah, I've heard they banned camera phones in bookstores in Japan cuz the kids were just taking pics of articles or whatever, something I did actually, with my digicam while in Taiwan There is an outside display on the flip phone that has time while on standby and caller information when someone calls (you can do picture caller id too, which I thought was so cool but that I've yet to use) Live I've mentioned previously, I really like the antenna, it's very well built, looks cool too I like how on the face of the battery (back of the phone), they have 4 small raised dots that will try to minimize scratch on the phone. There's a sticker that says this phone is equiped with some location service that would enable a 911 call to determine where you are, I'm not sure if that is truely implemented The color screen is a nice addition but it's not like a killer feature or anything. The big display also leaves it open for those nasty sweat/grease spots.. gross. I have the plastic still on it, Chinese to the fullest baby! Menu-wise, switching from a Motorola to Samsung cell phone isn't too bad, I suffered major rehab when I had to switch from Nokia.. The biggest change is that a single contact can have different phone numbers now (home, office, mobile, etc), that's cool, but you need to go deeper into the menu to reach someone if they have multiple numbers Battery life hasn't been too bad, I charge it every other day though I don't really run out but I don't talk that much on it, I've heard that if you do, you'll have to charge everyday The get it now features allow a user to purchase games, wallpapers and ringtones, that's kinda cool I guess though I'm not gonna shell out any bucks for that You can actually do wap (wireless web) on this phone, there's a quick hack so you don't pay Verizon to enable the feature (using this does count toward your airtime) for it that I got from the samsung_a670 yahoo group: - menu, mobile web, hit 0, enter the last 4 digits of your phone number - edit the gateway, change the address 1 to 12.25.203.11 - edit port 1 to 9201 This small hack will let you use OpenWave's wap tunnel and if you go to cool sites and then msnbc, you have the option there to enter a link (like wap.oa.yahoo.com) I played with it for a bit but it's really not that useful (the sidekick was still killer, wish service reception was better) Browsing the yahoo group (kinda pointless btw, except for the hack I listed), people are talking about how to remove the Verizon wireless banner that appears on the display but that doesn't bother me that much My one minor complaint is that you can't set the volume level if you have the ring set to vibrate + ring, as it is (level 3 or something), it's pretty low. The vibrate itself is not very strong, I've had plenty of missed calls because of that Links - http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/samsung_a670/ - blog post 10/19/2004 - Ordered New Cell With Verizon
