Went to see Last Samurai w/ Tom Cruise at AMC Saratoga.. was pretty good, longer than I thought but very Edward Zwick, especially noticed the narration and to a larger extend those dream/fantasy sequences, reminscent of the same technique the director used for Legends of the Fall... (Zwick also directed Glory)
Cinematography was tops, and the whole movie had a great epic'ish feel to it, ending a bit too sappy but on the whole, it worked
Movie was pretty strong, better than I expected
Last Samurai (2003) -
4/5
Excellent epic movie about feudal Japan turnin modern and forgetting the ways of the samurais
Tom Cruise plays battered soldier Nathan Algren, who's but a shadow of his former selft after taking part in brutal conflicts against the Native Americans... he finds purpose again when the Japanese emperor led by some interested business men want to erradicate the samurai rebellion in their country... after being captured, Algren discovers much about the way of the samurai and finds something he had lost a long time ago... honor... the actor who played the rebellion leader was pretty good (Ken Watanabe) and the lead actress (Koyuki) had a real subdued beauty thing goin on, like not so obvious but really beautiful
