Shoreline Amphitheater (Mountain View, CA) - section 200 row b - ~$60 We had pretty good seats, didn't have to stand much. Both artists rocked although Mayer distinguised himself with crazy guitar skills and painfully expressive facial expressions. The show started at 7 and finished shortly after 11. Maroon 5 was the opening band, but we missed most of it. They sounded okay (Tran said they sounded great!) I really wanted to see the Counting Crows but they didn't play "Black and Blue" or "Good Time" off their latest album Hard Candy. They did "Miami" though and it was nice. It's okay anyway cuz their first encore song was "Holiday in Spain" which was amazing (Adam solo on the piano). They had that nice live arrangement for "Mr Jones" and everyone hummed along "A Long December". I guess there were a buncha songs I didn't know, but the band had good energy. They closed their set with "Hanginaround" Mayer was surprisingly (or not) the headliner, he came out at about 10pm, opening with his newest single "Why Georgia". He was overall pretty impressive. He played some new songs from forthcoming album Heavier Things, prolly due out this fall. Two of em were real good: "Something's Missing", a pop'ish, very Mayer style ballad, and "Come Back To Bed" which was another slow song but more guitar trippy iirc. His highlights were off course "Wonderland" and "No Such Thing" but pretty much all the songs off 'Squares are butta. I especially liked Neon, which concluded the evening. While the Crows had a pretty cool set with a bright picture in the beginning, Mayer opted for a more elaborated light show which fitted. Overall, it all sounded great, good concert. Shouts to my concert homies Luce (word for gettin the tix) and Cary, and of course, my girlfriend Tran Links - http://www.johnmayer.com - http://www.countingcrows.com - http://www.maroon5.com - pictures - /2003/2003 07 jul 13 counting crows john mayer
