Kira's brother gave us the heads up on Cathedral of Christ the Light, which was new newly completed in Oakland at end of September. The dedication is November 2, 2008 This cathedral replaces the one destroyed in the Loma Prieta earthquake (1989) with a modern glass and metal shell, looking like no other cathedral I've seen. It is the first cathedral built in the 21st century and cost around $190 million (about as much as the De Young Museum) ![]() ![]() It's actually refreshing compared to the big concrete cathedrals in Los Angeles or San Francisco The interior is most impressive The worship space in Christ the Light is a vesica pisces shape (translated into english means fish bladder), the shape formed by the intersection of two circles ![]() ![]() If this looks a bit familiar, it is the work of San Francisco architect Craig W. Hartman of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill who's responsible for the SFO International Terminal Kira liked the swanky pulpit There's some art in the rooms (alcoves?) along the sides ![]() The wood made the space warmer despite the sheer vastness, the play with the light was also well thought out though it's a bummer there's no stained glass. It's a grand departure from traditional cathedrals ![]() Make sure you check out the bronze artwork all around the room and the ultra modern confessionals. You should definitely sit a while to take it all in.
