San Francisco joins one of only 10 elite cities to have a Barneys store. It is located at the former space of FAO Schwarz, a block from Union Square. Although plans for the 60,000 square foot store were announced over two years ago, the opening on Wednesday Sept 19, took me by surprise, like overnight magicI stopped by after work.. quickly forgetting the shopping golden rule "No, no. You go to look. It's Barneys!" Hahah This is where you'll find the store's signature "fairy blue" skin-toned mannequins. Twenty thousand pairs of shoes. A $14,000 Vionnet gown. Phone-booth-size parfum sniffing chambers. A $75 tube of lipstick by Serge Lutens. (Refills are only $30.)The mens section at Bloomingdale's always left a bit to be desired (though its lighting is grandiose), Barneys ripostes with two floors (5 and 6), it's a more intimate layout albeit a bit busy. Most of all, it seems to have more selection with super exclusive brands you may not even know existed (check out the Co-Op). Course, everything is priced accordingly (sooooo expensive) from $200 shirts, $100 ties to $400 shoes. This will hold over big spenders as more luxury stores are to open downtown Update: SFluxe on the snazzy opening ![]() Barneys 77 O'Farrell St San Francisco, CA 94108 (415) 268-3500 barneys.com Google Maps (O'Farrell at Stockton) Hours Monday - Friday 10a - 7p Thursday 10a - 8p Saturday 10a 7p Sunday 11a - 6p Pics from the Chronicle ![]() ![]()
