After annoying my friends about it everyday for the last two weeks I took the plunge and bought an iPhone, word to me. Some thoughts:- waiting in line for an iPhone was for suckers, I went to the San Francisco Apple store (1 Stockton) after a baseball game around 10:30p, no lines, got to play with one and bought mine shortly after: the sweetness (it's mostly not selling out) - what really put me over the edge: ok battery life, pretty scratch resistant screen, no contract issues (I was on a contract with AT&T) + I tried Bloglines and Meebo (no Flash but Ajax/Javascript is a go) - activation was hot (probably because I'm already a customer), like 3min if that - the new $60 plan includes 200 SMS, I paid like 10 or 15cents before for each of em (see activation issue poll) - we've all been training for this touch screen interface using the laptop trackpads, Apple's laptops with that technology are gonna rule Bleh - 2mp camera is very cameraphone grade (low light and macro is sad), see samples - it's rather big (thin but dimensions bigger than a full size iPod) - 3rd party iPhone apps currently kinda lame (hahlo almost works) - no chat (though you can go online, it's not as that user friendly though) - can't save pictures from the web - can't use my songs as ringtone - iPhone with 3g to be announced for Europe/Asia? - requires other hand on dock to remove iPhone - you can configure favorite iPod buttons (bottom) but "shuffle all songs" is missing Buggy - cannot use auto-complete for email contacts in Gmail on Safari - cannot expand folders in Bloglines - Safari keeps reloading every pages I visit (even when you go back), hello cache? - pop (Gmail) is just so unproductive, need some syncing action, hard; related: mail app freezes while deleting a bunch of emails Lows - 8gb version for ~ $640 is a bit ouch - Safari crashes (exits) randomly, Ipod also (maybe related to Safari lameness) :-( - iPhone - tried transferring some mp4 movies but it said they were not supported by my iPhone.. but this crappy Family Guy ep (pixelated and 3:4) does - headphone plug (apparently to accommodate mic) does not support most headphones including mine, I don't like to use the white earbuds: even worse the Belkin accessory ($11) they sell makes the iPhone horrendous (it's way too long); Kottke just exacto'd his headphone plug, that works - related: no way to skip songs while iPhone in pocket (you can do that with other iPods.. buttons ya know?).. actually that's my bad for not wanting to use the provided ear buds/mic/remote Awesome - interface is snappy - screen is fabulous (big, bright and hopefully won't scratch easy) - virtual keyboard is so far so good - Google Maps even better than Blackberry's version (ui but also the directions) - YouTube custom player - Quicktime videos online (mostly Apple trailers) - iPhone is pretty tough Here are some pics from my iPhone set People in line to play with the iPhone at the San Francisco store, 11pm ![]() Hello ![]() ![]() iPhone next to stuff ![]() iPhone camera samples, more ![]() ![]() ![]() Check out a million links from del.icio.us, my favorite reviews: Pogue and Mossberg Links - blog post 1/9/2007 - iPhone envy - blog post 1/31/2007 - Blackberry Pearl, a week later
