Miranda July stopped by Modern Times to promote her book of short stories "No One Belongs Here More Than You". I had never heard about her before I saw her quirky website Miranda explained she got no money from her publisher for a real book site so she did it herself without any knowledge web experience. She cooked up a site made entirely of pictures. It was fun enough to make me create an Upcoming event for this reading.. I shoulda known from the rsvp that it would be packed. I think over a hundred people showed up She's actually quite versatile being a "performance artist, musician, writer, actress and film director". The movies she made actually got a bunch of awards (albeit of the independent variety, still coo). She may also get extra local love having lived in Berkeley. Her parents and brother were in attendance This was the 2nd time she ever read for people, she pulled it off okay, the venue was just not super appropriate. They ended up making her read on this space up top, it looked mad dirty and was real awkward to have her go up a ladder (she was wearing a skirt) Anyway, she read "This Person", "Man On The Stairs" and another half a story. I was sorta predisposed to hate this (it all seemed too cute) but it wasn't bad, I actually liked her distinctive voice and humor, it's intensely personal and reflective: quite original The line to get the book signed was mad long and I didn't feel like paying top bucks for the book like at the last reading so I left. I'll try to get it from the library or Amazon Some pics, entire set and even more pics ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Links - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miranda_July
