One of the best movies I didn't see last year. A gem that more people should check out

Picture: Y! Movies

Stranger Than Fiction (2006) - 4/5
IMDB (7.8/10): An IRS auditor suddenly finds himself the subject of narration only he can hear: narration that begins to affect his entire life, from his work, to his love-interest, to his death.

I absolutely loved this movie, quirky, whimsical, so interesting, it's a really weird movie that doesn't seem to be going much anywhere, except to its preordained final point, Harold's death. I liked all the little visual designs around Harold's daily life, that was lifted from Fight Club a bit. Everyone's acting is really good, starting with Ferrell, impressive. I also adored Maggie Gyllenhaal, so cute

The movie's strength is in the screenplay, kudos to writer Zach Helm, this was Kauffman territory, less weird and maybe better. He's writing and directing (first time) Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium with Natalie Portman, something to keep an eye on (due out November 16)

Edward Copeland on the direction
Director Marc Forster moves the film along well and certainly is building an eclectic body of work. To think the same director helmed Monster's Ball, Finding Neverland and Stranger Than Fiction is somewhat astounding.

Notes
This is a pretty popular title, Palahniuk used it, there are also a bunch of other movies

On location, the movie felt like it could have taken place in LA though that makes little sense since that's car city, I think it's meant to be NYC.. however I learned from the extras that it was shot in Chicago.. confused

I wish the movie had a better dvd cover treatment, I think there was a big thing about the "dot", along the lines of ending and finality
