I've used the Macbook for about a month. Not a switch proper, I still use Windows at work and on my desktop. It's also my first Mac ever (I had an Apple IIe in the 80s, it had a monochrome display with 5in floppy drive). How's the Macbook for a laptop?Good - shipped from China in a bout a week - the Macbook is all kinds of pretty, white > black cuz it's got the gloss (black is matte), a matter of taste I suppose, I wish it was constructed flawlessly but I'm mostly happy - screen brightness - Spotlight: cmd+space opens a search box top right, type in app name or documents, forget where things are, just search for them; the Start menu paradigm in Windows is so 1980 - scrolling down and sideways using two fingers on the trackpad, hot - the power adapter is outfitted with a magnet, this feature is hyped for how it would unplug gracefully if you ever trip on the cord but for me it's more about easy plug in (locks in), all connectors should be like this - F9 - F12 function keys to show opened windows, desktop, all windows within apps.. not so much Dashboard - connect to a pc share with smb://ip - built-in video camera and mic - FrontRow is soo nice (mostly music for me), the remote is handy too - iPhoto slideshow with the Ken Burns (the famed documentarian) effect is pretty hot, it dissolves from picture to the next with some motion zooming in and out, replicating this online would be hot - pretty fast boot, even if I rarely have to do so since Mac OS X is pretty stable So so - speakers are good but not loud enough - screen could be bigger, you pay for what you get - didn't really mess with Safari, I'm all Firefox - price: ain't cheap - remote using IR, how bout radio? - Bootcamp: haven't tried it, like ability to run Windows, lame to have to reboot; a program called Parallels lets you launch Windows from Mac OS, it's for pay though Bad - heavy, first thing I noticed unpacking, kinda bums me out - I shoulda read this, the specs say 5.2lbs, like ouch - lack of dedicated page up/down buttons - mini-dvi forces me to buy an extra cable to connect to a monitor - laptop get sooo hot, like wtf - not sure if this is a Firefox problem but the tab behavior is jacked, some elements are straight up skipped (checkbox, drop down) - unable to connect to a Mac from a pc even with the feature touted on the Mac, dunno - hate how the display wobbles as you move the laptop or readjust, the cheapness - iPhoto: organization in rolls is not flexible enough, the albums are in effect playlists with links to the actual library, organization is really hard, I end up keeping a copy of all the pics, the albums reflecting the ones I want but the space waste probably will be an issue - Flickr Uploadr, retarded how long it takes to authenticate, I'm not too happy with the progress update as you upload; where is the integration for iPhoto (some dude wrote a plug in, for pay) Verdict I'm cool with it, I can't say I'm super happy, I don't even think I could recommend it especially if you have to do work on this. It was an impulse buy coupled with being extremely bored, Apple you lucky bastard Must get apps (all free) - Firefox - Xtorrent, built in torrent search is cool - Adium (though Meebo is kinda hot) - Skype for video and voice - VLC for most videos (I hear you have to get WMP for .wmv, I've been able to avoid em so far) Links - http://www.flickr.com/photos/kewlio/sets/72157594305471838/ - http://danielbored.blogspot.com/2006/09/just-ordered.html
Comments u may know this, but putting two fingers on the pad + click = right click. i'm pretty used to it now, and also the scroll... on windows i always try to scroll with double finger. ha g2k on 10/21/2006 11:58:44 PM, 761 days ago Get Quicksilver at http://quicksilver.blacktree.com/ The fastest way to launch apps and do many other things. read more at http://wiki.43folders.com/index.php/Quicksilver swissfondue on 10/22/2006 7:41:46 AM, 760 days ago actually i did not know about it, thx gee the wording "tap trackpad using two fingers for secondary click" is a bit weird daniel on 10/22/2006 10:49:41 AM, 760 days ago "- not sure if this is a Firefox problem but the tab behavior is jacked, some elements are straight up skipped (checkbox, drop down)" There's a setting for that: System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts > Full Keyboard Access "- unable to connect to a Mac from a pc even with the feature touted on the Mac, dunno" You'll have to divulge more info about why it's not working for you specifically if you want help with this. I connect to my Mac just fine from my PCs. You do need to go into System Preferences > Sharing > Services and enable "Windows Sharing" first though. If you are running the built-in Firewall, be sure that the firewall has "Windows Sharing" checked as well. monoclast on 10/22/2006 2:48:56 PM, 760 days ago I also bought the macbook about one month ago and am using iPhoto 6 for the first time. I found that a combination of albums, rolls, and keywords is an excellent way to deal with my 7,000 photos. I haven't even gotten into the rating system yet. I use Flock to upload to flickr. Very nice. Google's picasa iPhoto export is worth checking out too. I'm getting the yellow staining but no random shutdowns. Damn hot, yes! Jeff on 10/22/2006 10:23:45 PM, 760 days ago monoclast, thanks for trying to help, i turned on that option for the tab but it didn't make any difference within Firefox, still skipping dropdown and checkbox for the folder share, i'm ok for being able to connect one way for now daniel on 10/23/2006 5:55:09 AM, 759 days ago MacBook-- jeaaloouusss! Sigh...I'm probably not going upgrade my PowerBook to a MacBook Pro til graduation X_x Haha I do right click by pressing "ctrl + click." Vicki on 10/23/2006 2:00:55 PM, 759 days ago you'll like the double tap action :-) yeah pro kid, do it soon!! daniel on 10/30/2006 7:37:05 AM, 752 days ago |
