gochi is the south bay's best kept secret

Tanto was full (isn't it always) so I thought I'd try Gochi. Damn good! Dang Lil Gee, you woulda liked it (especially with Akachochin closed)

Gochi - A-
Gochi is my favorite new restaurant in the south bay. The style of this Japanese restaurant is izakaya, there's emphasis on alcohol but I'll have to try this another time. They offer barley and green tea (stick to green). Very good food on the level of Tanto (the Sunnyvale one), almost a flawless visit (forgot my camera, pics below are from Flickr)

Big ups to Melanie Wong and the Chowhound kids for the recommendations

Awesomeness dishes
- claypot with rock cod (like the snapper dish at Tanto), so good but pricey too at $35
- fried beef tongue, very interesting taste
- duck tataki, hits the spot
- yaki udon, stir fried udon with cabbage, fatty pork and onion, quite deelish

Okay
- shashimi moriawase, on point

So so
- kurubota pork chashu, wild mushroom and cheese pizza, family liked it though, thin pizzas is where it's at

To skip
- shiitake ebi tofu special, there's a similar Chinese dish so nothing special
- salmon oshi sushi, pressed sushi.. the mint was nice but way too much rice.. doubt the mackerel version is any better

For desserts we shared a green tea creme brulee (the waitress said it was done on site, as was the yuzu mouse) and sesame ice cream, not bad

The staff kinda rotates around so it creates a bit of inconsistency in the service. Still this super cute Japanese chick (ahh no camera) took our order and I was just so into talking to her hahah. Decor is super nice, especially for the Oakmont strip mall (bet. Wolfe and De Anza/Sunnyvale Saratoga)

$168, 4 people (we ordered about one dish too many)

To try
- grilled black cod in plum sauce
- halibut carpaccio
- enoki mushroom frisee salad
- kampachi sashimi
- more claypots (ground chicken, ..)
- chicken kara-age
- pork nabe
- fresh fish, cooked the way you want

I returned to the place (in hopes of seeing cutie waitress, she works Fridays! Nice stalking there) for lunch, the menu is a bit different with a limited (well compared to dinner). The "regular" items (i.e. teriyaki, etc) are very solid

Lunch (multiple visits)
- seared albacore over rice (optional bowl of udon, get it)
- beef tongue over rice (same as dinner menu, delish, again get udon)
- butabara negi udon (udon with fatty pork, the mushroom kinda tasteless but otherwise I love this dish)
- buta shoga don (sliced side pork in soy ginger), a bit heavy so you may want to opt out of the udon (comes with egg and mayo, stir that up)
- for a slight variation, buta kimuchi don (same as above, with kimchee and onion, better version actually)
- buta miso katsu don, pork cutlet over rice, with a nice miso sauce
- mabo don, ground pork and tofu, like the classic mabo tofu Chinese dish, over rice, the egg makes the dish
- friend tried the sake sanshoku don and it didn't look that hot (grilled salmon flakes, salmon sash and salmon roe)
- friend tried noku hamburger don, two meat balls patties with egg and cabbage, lookin aight
- lunch special hit and miss but do check it, you can email info@gochifusiontapas.com to be added to their daily lunch special mailing list

Reservations
A must (dinner), packed for lunch too, you need all the people from your table to be seated
